Pre-Grade 1-- With lyrical language and a warm multigenerational message, this exuberant picture book shares the experiences of a visiting preschooler and her grandfather as they tour his farm before a summer rainstorm. The grandfather successfully interprets the farm in language to which his granddaughter can relate, describing its inhabitants in familiar terms. Lloyd's full-color, realistic watercolors catch the mood of the story, darkening as the storm approaches; effective use of shadow underscores the effect. The only marring effect of the double-paged spreads is the anatomical rendering of one horse. Burstein's Anna's Rain (Orchard, 1990) deals with much the same theme, but Otto gives a livelier treatment. A sure-fire success for storytime or reading together. --Carolyn Noah, Worcester Public Library, MA
