Klausner depicts words as travellers from the earliest times in history to the present day, and begins her chronicle in the first century a.d. when the Roman armies invaded Britain. Chapters on roots, eponyms, and new words are informative and interesting. A chapter on names gives the origins of names of flowers and animals. Readers will discover why there are Ferris wheels, cardigans, and melba toast as well as how many words have ancient roots. All the information here can be found elsewhere, but this book provides an enjoyable browsing title with a generous side offering of history. --Dorothy L. Lilly, Grosse Pointe North High School, MI
