In his profound yet accessible work, the sequel to Rome: profile of a city, 312-1308 ( LJ 9/1/80), Krautheimer illuminates the dramatic urban and architectural changes wrought in Rome by Alexander VII. The author reveals the pope's distinctive vision of the Baroque style and explores his informed collaboration with geniuses like Bernini and da Cortona. The problems of constucting churches, palaces, streets, and squares in the strongly threatrical and contemporary style while accommodating both the mundane realities and ancient glories of the city are vividly told. Included too are considerations of Alexander's involvement in non-papal buildings and projects never brought to fruition.
