Nothing remains of the ancient Greek city of Tanagra. The charming terracottas produced there from the Archaic through the Hellenistic period, however, are reminders of its former glory. The most famous, from the age of Alexander, are figurines of ladies in elegant poses known as "Tanagras par excellence. " Because of the demand for these Tanagras, forgeries abounded in the late 19th century, and this work concludes with excerpts from letters between shady dealers and troubled collectors. Until his retirement, the author was deputy keeper of Greek and Roman antiquities at the British Museum, which has one of the finest collections of the figurinesand fakesin the world. The most comprehensive book to date on the art of Tanagra, highly recommended for art history collections.Eleanor Riley, Getty Conservation Inst. Lib., Marina del Rey, Calif.
