Fungi of Temperate Europe is one of the most comprehensive mycological guides ever published. Featuring more than 7,000 photographs, this lavish two-volume set treats more than 2,800 species of fungi across the region.

Including agarics, boletes, chanterelles and morels but also more obscure groups such as cyphelloids, cup fungi, pyrenomycetous fungi and hysterioids, this guide takes an unprecedentedly broad approach to communicating fungal diversity. All species are illustrated with one or more photographs and information is given on morphology, ecology and distribution within temperate Europe. Furthermore, 1,500+ species are discussed as potential look-alikes. The books are divided into eighty “form groups,” each starting with an innovative comparison wheel with guiding photos, distinguishing characteristics and drawings of essential microscopic features. Poisonous and edible species are colour coded within the text.

Revealing the world of fungi in all its splendour, Fungi of Temperate Europe is a must-have resource for any amateur or professional mycologist.

· 7,000+ photographs across 1,700 pages
· Colourful, up-close photos unrivaled by other mycological guides
· Coverage for 2,800+ fungal species
· Innovative and accessible system of identification

Book Description Condition: new. (Hardcover, 2019). (2019) 2019 1st English language edition. 4to hardbacks, 2 volumes (198 x 288mm). Pp1-816;817-1717. Many thousands of colour photographs throughout, some colour diagrams, a very few b/w line illustrations, 14-page bibliography. Pictorial laminated boards, issued without dust-wrappers. Fine new unread set of two hardback volumes. First published in Denmark with the title, Nordeuropas Svampe, this is a detailed identification guide to "more or less the whole fungal kingdom." "In Denmark, the number of species of fungi currently known is about 8,000, and in the UK the figure is almost double that. For temperate Europe we estimate that the total number of species is higher than 20,000 and the number of fruitbody-forming fungi is at least 6,000 - 9,000 (including about 2,000 species of lichens). As a rule, a given region should have 6 - 10 times as many fungal species as flowering plants. .With the new DNA-based techniques, fungi can be detected from any medium, including wood and soil samples. This means that our knowledge of the true occurence of fungi in nature is increasing exponentially. It also means that many old dogmas stand to fall with regard to the nature of fungal biology and classification." Chapters include: Scope and design; Why study fungi?; The fungal kingdom; fungal nutrition; Fungal biogeography and habitats; Asexual propagation; Fruitbodies; Microscopy; Tastes and smells; Working with fruitbodies; General identification wheels; Chanterelles and the like. Identification wheels for groups of agarics: Pleurotoids; Clitocyboids; Hygrocyboids; Mycenoids; Tricholomatoids; Collybioids; Marasmioids; Cystoderma and the like; Lepiotoids; Chamaemyces and Limacella; Amanitoids; Russula; Lactarioids; Pluteoids; Agaricus and Allopsalliota; Coprinoids; Psathyrelloids; Hypholomatoids; Gomphidioids and Melanomphalia; Pholiotoids; Little Brown Mushrooms (LBMs); Inocybe; Hebeloma; Cortinarius; Paxillus and the like.
