Wenatef, an officer and Kinsman high in Pharaoh's service, has been assigned to guard the workers at His Majesty's tomb while it is under construction. Troubled by whispers of robbery and corruption among the tomb workers, themselves, but excluded from their counsels, he finds himself fighting shadows until the night he awakens in utter darkness with the taste of blood in his mouth, his life ebbing into silence. Wenatef crosses the boundary between life and myth. He had been told "You can't fight these monsters alone. You would have to go to the Land of the West and return with an army." Did he die? Did the gods really step in and take part in unmasking the corruption? Perhaps they did. Armed with the might of the West, he sets out to destroy the robbers and blasphemers and right an old wrong. Set during Egypt's declining years, A Killing Among the Dead is a tale of betrayal, revenge and redemption, and one man's discovery that no matter how alone we seem in our struggle against evil, the Great Ones are never far away.

From the Author:

I have always enjoyed watching people and studying history which is, after all, an account of things people did over time.  Ancient societies may be far separated from us by time, but if you read the words and accounts of everyday people, it's as though you're reading a letter from a friend.

There was a town of artists who constructed the tombs of the kings and nobles outside Thebes.  Their very nature - a collection of artists - made them singular; their town has been fairly well preserved and there are some excellent books about them.  I was fascinated by the scandal of tomb robberies in the late XXth Dynasty, and more so because the tombs robbed had been constructed by these workers.  How would they have reacted to the scandal?  What would they have done?

This story arose from those speculations.

A Killing Among the Dead. is the last book of the Memphis Cycle.  It is based on a terrible scandal of tomb robbery and corruption that occurred in the late XXth dynasty, 150 years after Ramesses the Great.

This story is different from my others, no matter what era they are set in.  It is shorter, and it is limited in its scope.  Though other characters make appearances, they are peripheral. The story only concerns Wenatef's actions over the course of perhaps two weeks. There is no scope for character development, except for that of Wenatef himself.  The conflict is set.  People seem either to love it or hate it.

I enjoyed writing A Killing Among the Dead: the story touched me.  It is a fitting close to the Memphis Cycle

From the Back Cover:

Tomb-Robbing and Murder in the Valley of the Kings

The great kings and queens of Egypt sleep in splendor in their tombs in the Valley of the Kings.  ...Or do they?

After hearing the jumbled, terrified account of one of his men, Wenatef, Commander of the Guard of Ramesses XI's tomb, is not so sure.  His  investigation  leads him through the  portals of  death to  unravel a  web of corruption  that reaches  into the great temples themselves.

This is a tale of Egypt in her waning years, beset by invading  nomads, corrupted  by centuries of power, a tale of one man who learns that no matter how alone he might think himself, in his struggle against evil, the Great Ones are never far.
