Francis Stevens is a thriving surgeon, in his late forties, at the largest HMO hospital, in Los Angeles. He resides in the wealthy neighborhood of Santa Monica, with his loving but overbearing wife, Ruth, and with his innocent teenage daughter, Abigail. Their lives are cushioned by wealth until the night of Francis' sudden death. Within one evening, Ruth and Abigail's world of innocence instantly dissolves and they are plunged into a world of hatred and prejudice. Throughout their journey together, Ruth and Abigail must learn to heal their emotional wounds and the animosity between each other.

The author, Randy Maizuss, manages to write about relationships, life in Los Angeles, family conflicts and much more while making the read easy and humorous. The book kept me interested from beginning to end. It is full of twists and interesting issues. It certainly makes the distinction among the different social classes seeing in Los Angeles. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for not only a good read but an artistic piece! --May A.
Maizuss's first novel is compelling, thought-provoking, and a page-turner. The characters are fleshed out and in an interesting twist, we get the story through different points of view. What happens when racism and anger meet a collision course with violence? I enjoyed reading Maizuss's take on L.A., as well as his carefully constructed plot points. I would recommend The Death of Francis Stevens for that summer beach or travel read. --Writer Beth
