Everyone has a unique life story but that of Armand Cymbalista is special. He very narrowly escaped being a victim of the Holocaust during the Second World War. Indeed, he was one of only a small minority who eluded the Nazis and made it out of Europe and to the new promised land of America. All the more remarkable in reading about his adventures is the plain fact that during the most precarious of times, Armand Cymbalista was a mere child. True, he was guided by courageous and resourceful parents had an older sister watching out for him. But he nonetheless showed the kind of gumption and resolve and fortitude and street smarts that one seldom sees in people, even decades older than he was at the time. His story gives the phrase "mature beyond his years" new meaning. Once in the United States and later in Canada, Armand Cymbalista put down new roots. As a refugee from Europe, he spoke French, Yiddish, German, Spanish and some Portuguese but no English. After learning English, and while still in school, he began to help out in the fledgling garment manufacturing company his father had started after arriving in Montreal in 1944. The early experience in business enabled him to eventually take the helm of Capital Garment and turn it into a successful maker of ladies coats, with customers from coast to coast. One cannot read Armand Cymbalista's story without thinking about the thousands of other European children of his generation who had no chance to avoid the Nazi terror and who perished. This book can be regarded as homage to these remarkable people- heroes in the true sense of the word. Life on a thread was written by Armand Cymbalista with the assistance of Montreal writer, Paul Globus. The photo on the front cover is of the Cymbalista family - Frieda, Joseph, Sophie and Armand - in Brussels, Belgium at the beginning of the war.
