9780692401606: The End of Summer (The Detective Bill Ross Crime Series) (Volume 1)

It is 2005. In the backyard of a vacant home in Austin, Texas a woman is lying on a recliner by the pool. She is spectacularly beautiful. Her brilliant white cotton dress reflects the setting sun and large designer sunglasses and a floppy hat protects her face from the damaging rays. Her arm hangs lazily over the side of the recliner her hand touching a glass of wine that rests on the terracotta tile. It is like a picture from a magazine. She is dead. It is now 2014 and the murder was never solved. Retired Scottish police detective Bill Ross is volunteering with the Travis County police and he is asked to assist in the investigation when the case is reopened. Who was she? Why did she die? Why was she staged in the backyard of this home? Tommy Ross is Bill's son. Tommy was part of the original investigating team in 2003. He had joined the Travis County Police Department after leaving the Marine Corps where he served two tours of duty in the Bosnian conflict. He had just graduated from the police-training program and was out on patrol when he was asked to check out a home in the Riverside neighborhood. The owners were gone at their summer home in Colorado. A neighbor reported seeing activity at the vacant home the previous night and Tommy was asked to check it out. He found the woman dead by the pool. It is 2014 and Tommy Ross is now a detective with the Travis County cold case unit. He and his detective partner Marie Mason both work for Detective Sargent Jack Johnson the head of the unit. The case is reopened and Jack agrees to employ Bill as a civilian volunteer. Bill's nickname in the Met had been Sniffer based on his almost uncanny ability to smell out inconsistencies in major crime investigations. Experience the highs and lows as the team investigates the case. Be there when they think that they have found the missing link only for it to end up as a dead end. Feel the tension when the pieces finally begin to come together and they realize that they may be on the path of a sadistic serial killer. The End of Summer is a fast paced crime thriller. The cold case team traps the killer and closes the net around him. Be there and feel the excitement of the chase. Will they be able to bring him to justice before he kills again?

From the Author:

Writing this book has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I retired recently from a 30-year career in the computer software industry and rather than go out to pasture, I decide to write. I guess I have been a storyteller all my life but never had the opportunity until now to sit down and create a novel.

I was born in Scotland and I have a soft spot for Scottish writers. I have read all of the books by Ian Rankin and his character Rebus. This style of writing was christened some years ago as "Tartan Noir" and I am trying to capture some of that style in my Detective Bill Ross Crime Series.

There are actually three main characters in my book series. Bill Ross who is a retired Scottish detective now living in Austin Texas. Bill worked in the Major Crimes division of the London Metropolitan police cold case unit, before immigrating to the USA in the 80's. Tommy Ross is Bill's son and is a former US Marine now working as a detective in the Travis County police department. The third principle character is Marie Mason who is also a detective in Travis County.

These three characters form the core cold case team in the book series. In book one, The End of Summer, they are on the hunt of a killer who staged a young woman's body in the backyard of an upscale Austin lakefront home.

I live in Austin and I write about the city in particular Travis County. People in the Travis County Sheriff's Office have been incredibly helpful to me in keeping my stories real and that the fiction is not too stretched to make it implausible.

I have written the second book in the series What's Left is Right and it will be published in time for Christmas. A man's body is found on the shore of Lake Travis in a remote part of Travis County. It is been terribly mutilated and beside it is a burning cross. The scene suggests that this may have been a lynching, but Bill Ross is not convinced and suspects that a false trail may be being laid.

About the Author:

Irving Munro was born in Scotland. He and his wife have been married for over 40 years and they have two children and three grandchildren. They left Scotland in 1981 and settled in Thousand Oaks, California where they lived for 20 years before relocating to Austin Texas. Irving is an engineer by profession but spent most of his professional working life in the enterprise software industry. He retired from the software industry in 2014 and he now writes crime fiction novels. The End of Summer is the first book in The Detective Bill Ross Crime Series.
