This is a story about one day in the lives of some of the Ploesti raiders, the men charged with the destruction of Hitler's oil. On this day, June 28, 1944, the target was not Ploesti but an oil refinery and storage facility in nearby Bucharest. Some of the men had a feeling about this one, a feeling they wouldn't return. Their experience taught them things rarely go as planned. This mission was no exception, but on this one things went terribly wrong, changing the lives of many, but bringing out the best in these men. This is their story.

About the Author:
Jerry Whiting is a South Dakota native. He moved to California during his high school years and graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara. He subsequently obtained a Master's degree from John F. Kennedy University. He worked as a probation counselor before becoming a police officer in the San Francisco Bay Area. During his 25-years in law enforcement he worked in a variety of assignments. His somewhat unique career took him to Europe to study European policing and he was given a temporary assignment to observe police techniques on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Jerry's first book, I'm Off To War, Mother, But I'll Be Back, was released in late 2001. He and his father, who was a B-24 tail gunner in the 15th Air Force in Italy, collaborated on this biography of his father's experiences. His second book, Don't Let the Blue Star Turn Gold came out in 2005. This book is a series of stories about the fates of U.S. airmen shot down over Occupied Europe during World War II, along with stories of the research behind these events. These two books required extensive research and Jerry made several trips to Europe in search of answers. He acted as publisher for Missions by the Numbers, a reprinted edition of the unit history of the 485th Bomb Group, released in 2008 and is currently the historian for the 485th Bomb Group Association. Among other accomplishments he provided background research and did the on-camera interviews for the 2004 documentary film Lives beyond the War, a film about several World War II vets, focusing on their experiences and how the war impacted them. In 2009 Jerry was honored to provide a training seminar in Washington D.C. for the Department of Defense group (DPMO) that continues to search for MIA's from all wars. He is semi-retired, teaches occasional classes and is often invited to speak to groups about his books and the stories in them. He and his wife live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he continues to be an avid student of our rich American History.
