Annals of Audacity & Hope Volume 2 is part of a two volume, international project to record the history of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. A resource for historians, religious and lay persons alike, it chronicles the challenges and triumphs of an emerging province as seen through the eyes of Sister Kay O’Connell. This story of collaboration between four distinct and separate provinces, Baltimore, Chicago, Wilton and the Province of Canada, as they reconfigure to become one new unified province, gives readers insight into the world of religious life within the Atlantic-Midwest Province from December 31, 2005 to 2015.

Sister Kay O’Connell entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1956 after majoring in English at Notre Dame of Maryland University. She taught high school English and journalism before becoming director of postulants at Villa Notre Dame, in Wilton, Connecticut, in 1969. For this ministry, she was a member of the first session of the Apostolic Religious Community Program for formators in Rome in 1970. Twelve years in provincial administration followed from 1971 to 1973 when she was councilor for spirituality, and 1981 to 1989 as provincial. For these ministries Sister Kay had many opportunities to study the heritage of the community, especially the historic challenges to St. Augustine, Alix Le Clerc and Peter Fourier, and Blessed Theresa. At Catholic Theological Union in Chicago in 1977-1980, courses in systematic theology and Scripture prepared her to give "You are Sent" retreats and to accept speaking invitations. During nine years in parish ministry for adult education in Massachusetts, Sister Kay tried to answer the burning question of many parishioners, “Whatever happened at Vatican II?” In 2000, she was missioned to write the history of the Wilton Province; this was followed by the present volumes on the inception and development of the Atlantic-Midwest Province. She thinks of all these ministries as having been “enriching, challenging and enjoyable.”
