Dr. Roby C. Barrett's The Gulf and the Struggle for Hegemony is the result of four decades of academic, government, and business experience in the affairs of the Gulf. The work describes the political development of the region, both in terms of the individual states-Saudi Arabia, the Gulf Emirates, Oman, Iran, Yemen, and Iraq-Syria-and their complicated inter-connected histories. The work introduces the concept of the Gulf Security System in regional development. This symbiotic relationship between the Arabian Gulf and the West has contributed to the stability and modernization in a region plagued by chronic instability and under-development. Dr. Barrett convincingly argues that a firm grasp of the Gulf's historical context is necessary to understand the present, which in turn is a requirement if the future is to be projected with any accuracy - Past as Present - Present as Future.
