Claudia Carls lives in Germany. From Booklist:
In this retelling of a tale credited to Carl and Theodore Colshorn, a starving miller chases his porridge pot toting wife into the woods, followed by their young daughter. The daughter loses her parents and her shoe, but is befriended by an eccentric-looking old woman who gives the girl another shoe and directs her to her destiny as wife of the kingdom's prince. This somewhat bumpy narrative is supported by the slightly outrageous, humorous plot and an illustrated twilight-zone landscape. Carls uses an amalgamation of computer-enhanced images and paintings to create an oddly textured folktale world. Claymation figures parade with Meer cats and ostriches in outlandish costumes reminiscent of the 1933 film version of Alice in Wonderland, and hyperrealistic, imagination-stretching details ear-shaped mushrooms, hairlike tree foliage, and turtles carried on shoulders like parrots combine with a mélange of architectural fragments and skewed perspectives to make this a visually intriguing offering.
