This is a provocative examination of the complexity of current military ethics in the United States. In the wake of a turbulent twenty-five-year period, the author argues that the environment in which members of the military must operate poses a severe threat to consistent moral behavior. He provides a theoretical perspective on the content, coherence, and rational justifiability of the--albeit uncodified--professional military ethic. He examines the military as a profession, the nature of professional ethics, the moral character of the laws of war, and the constitutional values of American society. Using specific examples drawn from World War II, from Vietnam, and from noncombat situations, he clarifies the moral framework within which military decisions must be made, both in time of peace and in time of war.

About the Author:

Col. Anthony E. Hartle is the professor of philosophy and a member of the permanent faculty at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has served tours of duty in Okinawa, Korea, and Southeast Asia. As a member of an airborne unit in Vietnam he was wounded and decorated for valor. He also commanded an infantry battalion in the 101st Airborne Division. Hartle is a member of the Executive Board of the Joint Services Conference on Professional Ethics and served as a staff member of the 1986 Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. He is the coeditor (with John Kekes) of Dimensions of Ethical Thought.
