In 1968 William Shawcross stood among anxious crowds in the last days of the Prague Spring. The following year he returned, and the result was this book, at once a biography, a history and a drama, chronicling the struggles of the Czechoslavak state and its charismatic leader, Alexander Dubcek. For this new edition he considers the purges that followed the Soviet invasion, the courage of groups like Charter 77 and the precarious thaw of Glasnost, the "Moscow Spring", reviving the memory of Dubcek and all he stood for. Shawcross's other books include "Sideshow: Kissinger, Nixon and the Destruction of Cambodia" and "The Shah's Last Ride".
