"Among the great explorer-travellers, Edward Granville Browne is in one respect unique: he compressed all the thrilling adventures of his life into a single year. During 1887 and 1888, Browne, a 25-year-old English graduate in medicine and oriental languages, journeyed across Persia (now Iran) by horse and mule. Along the way, he revelled in an extraordinary range of experiences, meeting despots and outlaws, poets and philosophers, mystics and magicians. Thereafter, his life was devoid of adventure, being passed almost entirely in the cloistered world of Cambridge, where - as a University don - he buried himself deep in his Persian books and earned recognition as the foremost authority on Persia. Browne's partiality shows throughout his monumental record of his travels, A Year Amongst the Persians. Yet this work is so astonishingly detailed that it remains undiminished as a classic study of the life, character and thought of Persians almost a century ago. Thus the reader can follow every step of this marathon journey and make his own assessments from all that is seen and heard. Moreover, Browne's youth and naïvety emerge as assets since they encouraged so many Persians to speak to him without reserve as he journeyed, via Turkey, to the cities of Tabriz, Teheran, Isfahan, Shiraz and Yezd, and to the stupendous ruins of Persepolis, the ancient capital sacked by Alexander the Great in 330 B.C.".
