From Booklist

Gent offers a look at garden design from the sixteenth century to the present. Part one is a brief history of garden design, then part two explores the twentieth-century gardens of such pioneers as Gertrude Jekyll in England and Beatrix Farrand in the U.S., and offers examples of informal styles, such as the cottage garden, ecological planting, and gardens created from plants taken from the wild. Discussed here, too, is Claude Monet's famous garden at Giverny, among others. Under the heading of "Touches of Wildness" is a variety of gardens in such diverse places as Sussex, Paris, and Australia. Gent discusses gardens and ecology, color traditions, large-leaf plants, and plants that grow in dry landscapes. Part three, "Designing with Plants," discusses such principles as structure, form, shape, pruning, proportion and scale, rhythm and repetition, texture and pattern, color and light, and solids and screens. Twenty black-and-white illustrations and 130 color photographs add to the book's appeal. George Cohen
