9780707803807: Flora Domestica: A History of Flower Arranging, 1500-1930

For centuries people have been using flowers and plants to decorate their homes. In a lovely book that combines practical how-to advice with informative social history, Mary Rose Blacker details the use of flowers and plants in houses throughout Britain, Europe, and North America-from the delicate bouquets of the 16th century to the extravagant displays of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Just as recipes culled from old cookbooks provide a taste of the past, so flowers and plants enhance the authentic appearance of a period room. Stunning photographs of specially commissioned floral arrangements, shown in the houses and great estates preserved by Britain's National Trust, offer ideas and step-by-step instructions for arranging Elizabethan wedding bouquets, Georgian-style garlands, Victorian table decorations, and much more.

200 photographs, 165 in full color, 8 3/4 x 9 5/8"

MARY ROSE BLACKER has worked with Britain's National Trust for 30 years, and was research assistant to the noted architectural historian Gervase Jackson-Stops. Blacker, who grew up in Ireland and whose family includes such knowledgeable and well-known gardeners as Lady O'Neill of the Maine, was instrumental in re-creating the famous 18th-century flower displays at the Trust's Osterley Park in 1985.

ANDREAS VON EINSIEDEL is an acclaimed photographer of interiors whose work has appeared in such magazines as House & Garden and Architectural Design and in Abrams' Historic Interiors of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Book Description National Trust, 2000. Rilegato. Book Condition: nuovo. Brand New Mint Copies. In origional wrapping. Lists of plants. Select Bibliography. Index. MARY ROSE BLACKER has been associated with the National Trust for thirty years. For a time she was research assistant to the architectural historian, Gervase Jackson-Stops, with whom she laid plans for this book. He would have been co-author had he not sadly died five years ago. The study of historical flower and plant arrangements have been an over-riding passion for much of her life, and she advises at various National Trust houses on the flowers to grow in cutting gardens, the vases to use, and manner of arranging suitable to the period. She has lectured on the subject and was responsible with John Hardy for recreating the eighteenthcentury flower displays at Osterley Park in Middlesex in 1985. Recreations of historic flower arrangements and step-by-step pictures were taken especially for this book by ANDREAS VON EINSIEDEL. Andreas works extensively for the National Trust and Historic Interiors, featuring many of his photographs, was published in 1999. He also works for magazines such as World of Interiors, House and Garden and Architectural Design. Many of the recreations were made by SONIA BERESFORD HOBBS, who has spent thirty-five years flower arranging. Her commissions include decorating the dining room and Waterloo Chamber at Apsley House and providing the garlands and flower decorations at Chatsworth for joint celebration of the Duchess of Devonshire's seventieth and Lord Burlington's twenty-first birthdays in 1990., Ill. bn: 156, Ill. colori: Illustrated throughout, Peso: 1270 gr.
