On 30th October 1941, No. 258 Squadron left Scotland for Singapore, Sumatra and Java. In the next 120 days the 22 pilots were reduced to a handful. Those who had not been killed had become prisioners of the Japanese. The author, who was one of those pilots, recounts the events of those days. He recaptures the atmosphere of the bitter aerial engagements, of the hostile jungle terrain over which they were battling, and movingly recallswhat it was like to see his comrades dying one by one.
