This unauthorized biography does not supersede Heifetz (Paganiniana Publications, Inc., 1976), which, while uncritically admiring, contains many first-hand documents. It does include a rare description of Heifetz's early training in Lithuania and Russia, but the source is not identified; footnotes are inadequate, and the bibliography lists no personal accounts of that time. Weschler-Vered's writing is subjective and gushing, replete with cliche and superlative. His adulatory description of Heifetz's public life contains musical and historical inaccuracies, sweeping or questionable statements, and a few typographical errors. The author concludes with a seriously uninformed musical analysis of Heifetz's style. Not recommended. Philippa Kirally, Cleveland
