Otherwise in perfect condition. - Content: The Ionians and Hellenism The author here presents a new assessment of the art, literature and philosophy of the Asia Minor Greeks - the lonians - in the eighth to the sixth centuries B.C. As he points out, the lonians are notable both for what they achieved and for the way in which they influenced the rest of the Greek world. Yet, in modern times, the culture of the lonians has traditionally been presented in terms of outstanding individuals, while the question of the general character of Ionian culture and the extent of its influence on later Hellenism has been comparatively neglected. In seeking to redress the balance, the author gives considerable importance to the historical background, basing his exploration upon a detailed study of the contemporary evidence. Early loss of independence, and absorption, politically and culturally, into the Athenian-dominated world of Classical Greece, has led to the viewing of Ionia through later and often alien eyes; yet, as this study suggests, the surviving contemporary evidence of early Ionian culture from Homer to the Ionian philosophers and lyric poets reveals a unified vision both unique and influential. In addition, the author also holds that the qualities of intellect, beauty and humour which characterise Classical and later Hellenism largely have their origins in the brief but inimitable flowering of sixth-century Ionia. C. J. Emlyn-Jones is Lecturer in Classical Studies at The Open University. He read Classics at the University of Birmingham and was awarded his PhD in Greek Philosophy in 1972. From 1968 to 1979 he taught Classics in the University of Wales at Lampeter. ISBN 9780710004703 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 293 Original hardcover with foiled dust jacket.
