                                  EVOLUTION OF SOCIAL-MILITARY FORMS

Within the long process of evolving transitions between underlying social forms and their parallel military organizations during the past 3000 years we have endured a number of distinct evolutionary stages. In each stage the identifying element has been the relationship of a society to its armed forces which has been quite different. The first in Western tradition was that of antiquity, the Greeks and then Romans, which more or less endured until the fifth century and gave way to the 'Romanic - Germanic' period of Germanic kingdoms established within the old Roman Empire. The ninth century saw the arrival of the feudal system (military vassalage; stipendiary tenement-fief) which graduallly disintegrated in the course of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and was replaced by the Early Modern phase (state formation) embodied in the Peace of Westphalia 1648. We find ourselves now in a new period of rapid transition from the Late Modern age which began with the French Revolution to a completely new era - the collapse of the nation state which had before driven forward the Late Modern age and its great conventional militaries - into a new age of insurgency wherein the combat order, this is, the order of combat infrastructure is indistinguishable from the social order. This new 'revisionist' model, which is the continuation of our long evolutionary descent, is our future for decades to come, perhaps centuries.
