The authors cover concisely the basic physics involved in the various processes by which electrons and ions are emitted from solids. Some of the ways in which the emission phenomena can be used are also outlined. The subject is introduced with a chapter on electron energies in solids and the potential barrier at the surface which prevents their easy escape. This is followed by a short account of adsorption of other materials onto solid surfaces and the effect this has on the potential barrier. Separate chapters deal with thermionic electron emission, electron emission under high electric fields, secondary electron emission due to electron and positive ion bombardment, and photoelectric emission. A final chapter covers the emission of positive ions due to heat and high electric fields.
