Here in words and pictures is the story of the Royal Air Force in the Mediterranean area. This, the first of three volumes on the Mediterranean air conflict in general, covers RAF operations from June 1940 when the war began, to May 1943 when the victorious Allies finally ejected the Axis forces from North Africa.
The operations of the legendary Western Desert Air Force are fully covered, also the operations of the gallant defenders of Malta, and of the squadrons that fought over Greece, Crete, Iraq and Syria. The development is traced of an air force which, from tiny beginnings, grew to become a mighty force which swept all before it.
In June 1940 Gladiators and Blenheims struck fast and struck hard to gain an early ascendancy which was later to be lost and regained in some of the hardest and most costly air fighting of the war. By 1943, Spitfires and Kittyhawks ruled the air, allowing bombers and fighter-bombers to attack, at will, targets in close support of the army, and to deny to the enemy both supplies and support, until his armies on the ground atrophied from lack of them, and a quarter of a million men had to be abandoned to fall into Allied hands in Tunisia in May 1943.
