PreKindergarten-Grade 2 --When one cat wakes up, she steals two fish, fights with three teddy bears, and wreaks havoc throughout the house before leaving ten muddy pawprints on her way back to sleep. The colorful illustrations add charm and verve to the simple text. The layout is particularly effective, with the left-hand pages showing primitive or folk-style paintings of the playful cat courting disaster, while those on the right show the cat (along with numerically sequenced damaged goods) isolated against a white background. The items to be counted are named at the top of that page, with the digit boldly printed in the top corner. At the bottom, the text leads readers into the next crisis. The rectos have borders of motifs from the versos, extending the visual appeal of the book and giving it a more unified look. While counting books seem to be in endless supply, they are also in endless demand. This one should please both young counters and cat lovers. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elem . School, Pasadena, TX
