Synopsis

Each day the gypsy walks with the sea on his right and the mountains on his left, and each night he rests and plays his lute. Four beautiful animals - the lion, the grey Ibis, the scorpion and the viper snake hide in the shadows and listen to him play. One morning he doesn't wake up - how can the animals save the life of the gypsy whose music they love?

About the Author

Geoffrey Patterson was formerly an interior designer and a set designer for the BBC. He is now an author/illustrator of children's books and was winner of the 1986 Smarties Prize.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1 Up-- A folktale-like story based on Rousseau's famous painting, "The Sleeping Gypsy." A gypsy, returning to his parents' village after many years, is (unknowingly) followed by a lion, a scorpion, a green snake, and an ibis, all of whom delight in the music from his lute and watch over him when he sleeps. When the man eats a poisonous blowfish and fails to awaken, the animals come to his rescue. The illustrations, in full color with black pen-and-ink outlines, detail, and crosshatching, have a graphic look. Their bold design and vivid colors mimic Rousseau, as do Patterson's primitively painted people. The style ranges from bold-toned, watery tempera; to a dry brush effect; to fingerpainted skies. Each spread is bordered by a thin rectangle of color that blends with one in the painting. This same band also sets off the text. Carefully crafted, from attractive jacket to endpapers and flyleaves, this tale is artistically packaged and pleasing to read, but may be of limited appeal to children. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH
