9780711227071: The Arctic: The Complete Story

The Arctic has recently become the subject of attention from both politicians concerned about the effects of climate change and tourists interested in its icy beauty. Richard Sale, one of the world's leading Arctic scholars and a professional glaciologist, presents readers with the culmination of a lifetime's work studying this region. With 500 stunning photographs, this book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in this beautiful and little-known part of the world.

About the Author:

Richard Sale is one of the world's leading Arctic scholars and explorers and a professional glaciologist. He has written widely on Polar history, exploration and wildlife and is the author of many books, including To the Ends of the Earth: The History of Polar Exploration which was the 2003 UK Outdoor Writers Guild Best Book on an Outdoor Theme, and The Gyrfalcon (Popatov and Sale), which was the US Wildlife Society's Book of the Year for 2006.

Review:

This book represents an extremely ambitious endeav¬or, namely the production of what is effectively a single-volume encyclopedia on the circumpolar Arctic. One has to admire the author's chutzpah in even attempting such a task; however, except in selected areas, the results are less than impressive. The illustrations undoubtedly represent one of the book's greatest strengths. It is profusely illustrated with superb photographs taken either by the author or by Per Michelsen. Very few coffee-table books on the Arctic can match this volume in terms of the quality of the photography. ...the strength of the text undoubtedly lies in its treatment of birds and mammals. But the wildlife enthusiast should be warned that this is not a field guide that would fit into an anorak pocket. It measures 9.5 x 12.1 x 1.9 and weighs a little over 7 lbs! But even with its limitations, in view of its strengths this volume would be a useful addition to any library, especially school libraries, and to the home library of any family with an interest in Arctic wildlife. --Arctic

This lavishly produced and weighty tome is a remarkable publication covering all things polar. --Naturalist
