The fruit of a quarter of a century of walking, reading and thinking about the unique mountain playground of the Lake District, this book provides surprises for even the most ardent lover of the Lakes. Familiar with it in all weathers and all seasons, the author Steve Goodier describes his passion for fell-walking, explores little-known routes that will tempt and surprise even those who think they know the fells well, and uncovers some Lakeland oddities. He also reflects on favourite but generally disregarded mountains and finally discusses some of the writers who have shared his love of the Lakes, from the famous including Coleridge (the first recorded fellwalker), Wordsworth and Wainwright to the less well-known H.H. Symonds, W.T. Palmer and novelist Graham Sutton. By revealing and sharing the pleasure that the mountains have given the author and countless others over the years, this book takes its place amongst those that are essential reading for any lover of the lakes.

Review:

It is clear that [Steve Goodier] wishes to infect his readers with his passion for the fells and does this by revealing and sharing the pleasure that the mountains have given both him and countless others over the years. This book is the nearest thing, in print, to a gossipy newspaper for walkers! Keswick Reminder Provides surprises for even the most ardent lover of the Lakes. Familiar with it in all seasons, author Steven Goodier describes his passion for fell-walking, explores little-known routes that will tempt and surprise even those who think they know the fells well and uncovers some Lakeland oddities. Lancashire Life His respect for past Lakeland writers as well as his passion for fell-walking shine out from the pages of this book. Westmorland Gazette A lively and, at times, subjective read. But you certainly won't be left wanting any information or ideas: 'Places, People and Passions' is the book's subtitle, and with a doubt he has shared his passion. Cumbria Best read by the fire with a map to hand so you can discover and plan new routes for walks in 2011. Grange Now! Not just another guidebook, but more of a personal record and recommendation. It's pleasantly filled with surprises - in fact, not unlike the area itself. Manchester Evening News Steve surprises the reader with his passion. He explores little known routes across fell and mountain in all weatehrs and seasons, both by day and night. The result will come as a revelation to even those who think they know the fells as he uncovers a few Lakeland oddities. This is a book to keep on the shelf where it is to hand when you need inspiration. Camping Magazine Steve Goodier's rambling mountain memoir is part map and reminiscence, recollection and fresh enthusiasm. He has trodden the beaten track but also discovered the unfrequented paths and this addict of the lonely hills is gracious enough to share his wide knowledge with us. Cumberland News Steve Goodier's rambling mountian memoir is part map and reminiscence, recollection and fresh enthusiasm. He has trodden the beaten track, but also discovered the unfrequented paths and this addict of the lonely hills is gracious enough to share his wide knowledge with us. Workington Times & Star Steve's style is friendly and chatty yet professional and informative; often it's like a series of magazine columns threaded together under themes. His fondness of the Lake District shines through and should rub off on the reader. Cumbria Life
