Samuel Whitehead, landlord of the Rose and Crown, is a stranger in the lonely East Anglian village of High Eldersham. When the newcomer is stabbed to death in his pub, and Scotland Yard are called to the scene, it seems that the veil dividing High Eldersham from the outside world is about to be lifted.Detective-Inspector Young forms a theory about the case so utterly impossible that merely entertaining the suspicion makes him doubt his own sanity. Surrounded by sinister forces beyond his understanding, and feeling the need of rational assistance, he calls on a brilliant amateur and 'living encyclopedia', Desmond Merrion. Soon Merrion falls for the charms of a young woman in the village, Mavis Owerton. But does Mavis know more about the secrets of the village than she is willing to admit?Miles Burton's novels have long been neglected as mere puzzles, but his skill at elaborating intricate plots, combined with their realistic village settings, mean that the best of his books deserve a broad new readership.Like the novels of Freeman Wills Crofts, Burton's best work is fast-paced and crisply told, and The Secret of High Eldersham - which uncovers ancient secrets in sleepy rural England - is among the most entertaining of all his crime stories

About the Author:

MILES BURTON was a pseudonym of Cecil Street (1884-1964), a British soldier who became a prolific novelist in the 1920s. He was the author of approximately 140 detective novels, of which the most highly regarded were published under the names Miles Burton and John Rhode.

Review:

I just love these classics. The book will keep you on tenterhooks. (NetGalley)

I love the writing style of this as it very much has the "Golden Age" feel (which would make sense since it was first released in 1930). Even though the story line seems to be one huge long tangent after another at times it still ends up making sense. I absolutely adore Poisoned Pen Press and their British Library Crime Classic series (and, of course, NetGalley for making me aware of them). SO many amazing authors that I had never heard of before -- including Miles Burton, the author of The Secret of High Eldersham which is being re-released by PPP on June 7th. Surprisingly (to me, at least), this is the first of something like SIXTY titles featuring the character Desmond Merrion written over a thirty year span. I've already scoured my usual places for unusual titles and now I'm just left sitting here hoping that PPP decides to re-release all of them ... and quickly. (NetGalley)

An old time murder mystery, this book kept me enthralled from the beginning.~~~Beautifully written, with some fab description, this book takes you back to the years between the wars, where no one had a mobile phone and the Internet was decades away.~~~If you enjoy Poirot mysteries or Lord Peter Wimsey you will enjoy this book.~~~Definitely recommended.~~~Thoroughly enjoyable. (GoodReads)

Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense novel. (Deborah White Genre Reviews)

This book was a very pleasant read. The story is slow, but in a good way. I especially like Mavis and her speedboat. This lady rescues one of the male main characters. (NetGalley)

This is typical of the crime books written at that time but nevertheless is quite sweet and doesn’t deviate from the plot too much, Great fun and thoroughly recommended. (Sue Kamolwan NetGalley)

The Secret of High Eldersham is the book which introduces detective Desmond Merrion, who went on to star in a long series of mysteries by Miles Burton aka Cecil Street. On the basis of this book, the popularity of the Merrion books is easy to understand. Although it starts as a straightforward murder investigation, strange behavior on the part of the townspeople and a boat with a strange schedule soon catch the detective's attention. The result is a book as intricately put together as any mystery reader could ask.~~~All in all, The Secret of High Eldersham is a mystery made to order for people who like puzzle-plots and meticulous construction. It is good to see the Golden Age stories coming back! (FangirlNation)

Beautifully written, with some fab description, this book takes you back to the years between the wars, where no one had a mobile phone and the Internet was decades away. If you enjoy Poirot mysteries or Lord Peter Wimsey you will enjoy this book. Definitely recommended! Thoroughly enjoyable. (GoodReads)

I love these classic mysteries that the British Library are releasing via Poisoned Pen Press. (Ian Hughes Murder, Mystery & More)

First published in 1930, this entry in the British Library Crime Classics series evokes a time when stouthearted chaps did their duty for king and country, and the village had only one telephone. When Samuel Whiteheard, the landlord of a pub in the remote English hamlet of High Eldersham, is found stabbed to death in his hostelry, baffled Det. Insp. Robert Young calls on his old chum Desmond Merrion, “a bachelor of independent and very considerable means” and “a living encyclopedia upon all manner of obscure subjects,” to help him unravel the mystery. The cast includes suspicious yokels, nervous aristocrats, uppity servants, and puzzled policemen. Beautiful and plucky Mavis Owerton, who’s being courted by one of High Eldersham’s wealthier inhabitants, catches more than Merrion’s eye. This book marks the first appearance of amateur sleuth Merrion, who went on to feature in nearly 60 novels from Burton (1884–1964).(June) (Publishers Weekly)
