About the Author:

ALAN MELVILLE (1910-1983) was a well-known television broadcaster, as well as a playwright, producer and scriptwriter. Among his works are several crime novels from the 1930s, often set in the popular entertainment world he knew at first hand.

Review:

"Melville's witty descriptions and dialogue, very much in the drawing-room manner of Noel Coward, are such a potent hook" (Kirkus Reviews)

"Originally published in 1936, this sparkling entry in the British Library Crime Classics series by Melville (1910 1983) centers on a traveling circus. Melville slowly reveals a complex web of crime encompassing most of the circus folk and even Minto's sister's fianc笠Readers in search of escapist entertainment need look no further." (Publishers Weekly)

"Melville was a well known television broadcaster, playwright, producer, and scriptwriter, as well as novelist. He clearly knew the world he describes, certainly knew it well enough to throw in details that carry the reader through some of the more unlikely plot points. The real pleasure though is in his humour. He has something in common with P G Wodehouse or Noel Coward, though with much more restraint than Wodehouse. It's what makes these particular books so re-readable. Who did it is a fun enough puzzle first time round, but the humour will remain an evergreen joy....this book is going straight on the shelf reserved for books guaranteed to cheer me up when I'm feeling a bit down." (Desperate Reader)

"Alan Melville's circus-set Death of Anton [is] very witty, written with the lightest of touches, and wastes no time in maundering on in a wannabe hard-boiled fashion while dealing with the seeming imprecations of a circus where death keeps raising its head..." (THE INVISIBLE EVENT: Classic detective fiction and locked room mysteries)
