Mexican textiles have a vitality that is unsurpassed elsewhere in the Americas. The arts of spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidery are practiced in hundreds of rural communities where indigenous peoples retain distinctive clothing styles, sometimes mixing this with post-Colonial influences. The author draws on her extensive travels in Mexico to provide a living context for these varied textiles. Techniques and clothing styles are explained and brief commentaries highlight the key features that make the designs so uniquely Mexican.

There is no better authority on world textiles than the British Museum. The transformation of that expertise--and the accompanying visuals--can be found inthe latest entry in the Fabric Folios series. The book is formatted this way: first, an introduction to the history, tradition, textiles, and decorative motifs of Mexico; and then100 or so actual all-in-color samples. In Mexico, the talent's in the brilliant cotton weavings and embroideries, from the red and blue dyes featured to the backstrap looms used to piece together rebozos, huipils, quechquemitls, and other exterior articles. All illustrations are well labeled with dimensions and descriptions; a glossary and bibliography wrap up this very accessible introduction to ethnic fabrics. Selected reading and museum accession numbers are appended. Barbara Jacobs
