Marowitz is best known for his reductive versions of Shakespeare. Here he turns a scathing eye to "Potboilers," i.e., enormously successful but shallow entertainments. Sherlock's Last Case casts the usual characters in a farcical light by reducing Holmes's character almost entirely to arrogance and Watson's to submission. Though thriller elements are present, the focus is on parody and dark social satire. Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life is a comic Strindbergian marriage battle full of wonderful invective and genuine loathing. Clever Dick is a hilarious burlesque of an Agatha Christie mystery that has gotten tangled with an English knickers farce. Sherlock's Last Case is scheduled for this fall's Broadway season. Thomas E.
