Jean-Jacques Sempé (b. 1932) is one of the most successful and best-loved cartoonists and illustrators in the world. He has published numerous collections of his work in his native France and thirty other countries since 1962, and still regularly contributes to magazines such as the New Yorker and Paris Match. He is the illustrator of Nicholas (2005), Nicholas Again (2006) and Nicholas on Vacation (2006), all available by Phaidon Press. He lives in Paris.
Translator Anthea Bell was awarded the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize (USA) in 2002 for her translation of W.G. Sebald's Austerlitz. Her many works of translation from French and German (for which she has received several other awards) include the Nicholas series of books (Phaidon) and, with Derek Hockridge, the entire Asterix the Gaul saga.
"Children in picture books tend to fall into two types: the vulnerable and the invincible. Often, a story will be about the journey from misfit misery to happy conformity. But Martin Pebble by Jean-Jacques Sempe is no ordinary picture book. It is about a French oddball who stays odd. This 1969 classic... is a treat. It is a boosting tale not least of all because [his] eccentricities are never overcome."-Observer
