Book Description Phaidon Press June 2011, 2011. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: New. The focus on the communicative power of art rather than on the objects it creates is central to artist Pawel Althamer (b. 1967), placing him at the forefront of current developments in contemporary art. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris (2006) and included in Documenta 10 (1997) and at numerous international biennials. The defining feature of Althamer’s work is the artist’s own body and its experience of the world, including documentation of undergoing hypnosis or ingesting psychotropic drugs. His work with non-artists can be interpreted as a fragmented self-portrait, giving others the chance to step into the role of the artist, often with surprising results. This publication includes an interview with the artist, a survey of the historical context in which Althamer’s practice started, and a focus on a series of documented science-fiction-inspired actions and activities. performed by a group of people from his neighborhood of Brodno in Warsaw. Also included is a short story ‘Mezella’, by Polish writer Marek Sieprawski. Plus, two conversations between Althamer and fellow artist Artur Zmijewski, covering a wide range of topics. Notes, Chronology, Bibliography, Illustrated Works. Color illus. 160p. Bookseller Inventory # 60061
