EARLY TOURS IN DEVON & CORNWALL - This is a collection of the descriptions left by eleven early travellers of their tours in the West Country. The journeys recorded range from the famous exploration of John Leyland in 1534-43 to the agricultural observations of William Marshall and the 'Letters from England' of Robert Southey written in 1802. All were made well before the age of railways, and all present valuable and arresting glimpses of social and economic conditions of the time. Leland, the gallant Celia Fiennes riding 'Through England on a Side Saddle' in 1669, Daniel Defoe and William Marshall are Well known; their material has long assisted historians and delighted general readers. Some of the people whose accounts are given here are less familiar: for instance, Cosmo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany who travelled through Devon on his way to the court of Charles II., and Dr W. G. Maton, who was particularly interested in botany and geology. A substantial work of 350 pages and with a full index, this collection was first published half a century ago and has long been virtually unobtainable, the few copies reaching the secondhand market fetching high prices. This new edition includes an introduction by Alan Gibson, who sets the work in perspective and adds some information on the first editor, R. Pearse Chope. The book has permanent reference value and for the most casual reader will extend appreciation of the way in which our countryside has changed and our own habits have developed.
