Book Description David and Charles, 1976. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. h/b 168 pages, condition is very good. The River Forth from its source in western Perthshire to the mouth of its estuary is 116 miles long, and of that distance the 63% miles from Stirling to the sea were navigated by excursion steamers. It was, moreover, a formidable barrier to north-south traffic and it was natural that the first ships to ply its waters should be ferries. Some were ancient; the Queensferry Passage operated from the reign of Queen Margaret of Scotland until the opening of the Forth road bridge, 800 years later. In this survey of Forth steamers and services from the 1850s to 1969 Ian Brodie vividly recaptures the atmosphere of those halcyon days before World War I when no fewer than 63 piers on the river and estuary were served by regular sailings or excursions. He takes up his story when the excursion tug was well established and the first true excursion steamer was about to emerge. He sets the scene by describing the peculiar hazards which faced steam-boat operators on the Forth and takes us to many vessels to many destinations. We sail up the river to Stirling, shooting Alloa railway bridge in the process and using independently worked paddles to navigate the Windings. We sail round the islands of the Forth and embark on adventurous voyages out into the German Ocean. We find out what happened to the Clyde favourite Redgauntlet when she encountered the short, steep seas of the Forth estuary and we join the holiday crowds packing the Aberdour steamers. Appendices list all the 248 vessels known to have operated excursion, ferry and packet services on the Forth. Bookseller Inventory # 049231
