I wrote this book in conjunction with preparing lectures for a course on the Peoples and Cultures of Southeast Asia. I taught that course for 25 years and stuck pretty close to the outline of the book. Although Southeast has changed a lot since I wrote the book, the theoretical framework it presents remains useful and valid. From the Inside Flap:
Southeast Asian societies--sometimes described as 'loosely structured'--are said to pose special problems for structural analysis. This book tests the method and theory of corporate analysis by using it to examine Southeast Asian social structure. The introduction shows the place of corporations in social structural analysis. Subsequent chapters look at the principles upon which corporations are based: sex, age, ethnicity, locality, descent, ritual and belief, common property interests, occupation, rank, and voluntary association. Each chapter draws illustrative material from Southeast Asian societies and attempts to solve a wide range of problems typical of social structural analysis. The penultimate chapter studies a single society--Brunei--as a whole, showing various types of corporations found in it, the principles upon which they are based, and the structural history of Brunei over the last century and more. The final chapter focuses on the main problem facing structural analysis today: the study of process. To demonstrate the relevance of structural studies to studies of process, the author describes the ways in which Brunei social structure has both been shaped by history and been a shaper of it.
