INSIDE CHINA Peter Worsley 270 pages First published 1975 Peter Worsley's account of his tour of China in 1972 escapes from the general pattern of books on China in seeking an understanding and assessment of the Chinese way of life at its working . level. Against a backdrop of capitalist South-East Asia the author describes the very different lives led by the people he saw in a Chinese commune, a factory, and a teachers' training college. He then sets these in the context of Chinese history and culture, particularly the history of the Communist Revolution. There follow chapters which skilfully examine the organization of the communes - 'the heart of the matter' - the pattern of life in the cities, and the unprecedented Chinese effort to break down the gulf between town and countryside. In his final chapter the author comes to grips with his own personal response to the Chinese achievement, compares Chinese development with development strategies in the capitalist world and examines criticisms of China from both Right and Left. Inside China is a record, together with an informed commentary, of what met a sympathetic and skilled observer's eye, and as such deserves the attention of all those who wish to know something of what life is like today in a country which contains one-fifth of the world's population.
