More than 3,700 scholars and specialists served as authors, authenticators, illustrators, reviewers, and consultants for this edition. Among the 57 new contributors this year are Roberto S. Goizueta, associate professor of theology at Loyola University of Chicago (liberation theology), Joseph M. Moran, professor of earth science at the University of Wisconsin (climate and weather), and Laurence Steinberg, professor of psychology at Temple University (adolescent).

World Book has approximately 17,000 articles, all of which are signed. Many articles, especially those likely to be of interest to younger students, are accompanied by study aids, which may include a list of related articles, an outline, study questions, and a list of additional sources that may be annotated. Longer bibliographies are divided by reading level. Volume 22, the Research Guide and Index, has more than 150,000 index entries and 200 reading and study guides that suggest paper topics and provide additional bibliographies. It also contains instructions for using the index and brief articles on writing papers, giving oral presentations, and doing research. The index provides access to illustrations, maps, overlays, and study guides. More than 5,000 see and see also references within the text make it easy for unsophisticated users to locate material without the index. Volume 1 contains general instructions on using the encyclopedia and lists the names and affiliations of all the contributors.
