Maps for geological periods were revised, and those for the U.K. now show the new local government structure of unitary authorities. Of 26 map changes, 9 are entirely new city maps (Hong Kong, Mexico City). Modern architecture added a shot of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and archaeology added the Great Zimbabwe complex, epigraphy, radiocarbon dating, and the Lindow Man--just some of 166 new and revised color illustrations.

In terms of currency, the AAE is usually right on top of things. Major revisions were done in 190 articles, concentrating on volumes 4, 6, and 8, with big topics such as Canada; drug; and film, history of; as well as updates to bibliographies. Another 2,500 articles were updated with small but important changes, such as the reclassification of the skunk in the family Mephitidae. In all, 16 percent of the text pages were revised, according to the editors. Although the 1997 Nobel Prize winners from October are not listed, death dates were added for Jacques Cousteau, James Stewart, and Mother Teresa, and August's devastating Montserrat volcano eruption and September's historic vote for an independent legislature in Scotland also made it into print. The glossary in computer now includes newsgroup and search engine. It is interesting to note that tobacco makes no mention of the alkaloid nicotine, described in the nicotine entry as extremely poisonous, nor does it recount June's tobacco company settlement or any of the recent (post-1992) political and legal wrangling surrounding this controversial topic.
