From Booklist:

If one of the goals of a reference set is to provide information, this set does that. If another is to encourage exploration, this set does that, too. High-schoolers will use these volumes to find background material for reading such works as The Crucible and To Kill a Mockingbird or for a U.S. history unit on the cold war, and they will not be able to resist browsing to look at other articles that catch the eye. Colored text boxes within articles (for example, a sidebar on Burma-Shave road signs in Automobile culture) and numerous color and black-and-white photos, most of them one-fourth to one-half page in size, add to the visual appeal.

More than 270 articles--from Abstract expressionism to Zhou Enlai--are alphabetically arranged. A short introduction describes the decade and explains the scope of the set: it "covers not only the major political events of the decade but also developments in the arts, sciences, and political culture." Material is relatively up to date, including Saul Bellow's death in 2005. Articles are usually one page (Sullivan, Ed) to four pages (Supreme Court), with plenty of cross-references. (The United Nations article references Bunche, Ralph; China; Cold war; Foreign policy; Middle East; and more.) Repeated in each volume are an index to the set, a time line, and a list of books and Web sites about the decade. The list is short, and there are no further reading lists attached to entries, so students who need to find additional material on any of the topics covered here will have to look elsewhere.

This set has much more pizzazz than Salem's The Fifties in America, published earlier this year, especially when one compares the articles on topics such as architecture and television with Salem's rather drab presentation. But the Salem set, which is intended for the high-school level and up, has approximately twice as many entries, a more expansive bibliography, and article-specific further reading lists. U.S.A. 1950s is recommended for high-school and public libraries wanting to provide an attractive introductory resource. Susan Gooden
