Last year Marshall Cavendish brought out the 10-volume Dinosaurs of the World [RBB F 1 99], which at the time was the only multivolume resource in print aimed at these creatures' largest fan base: children in elementary and middle schools. This current offering from Grolier is a worthy contribution to this ever-popular field and will serve as a useful companion set for the same age group.
The set consists of 12 thematic volumes covering such topics as dinosaur origins, dinosaurs and birds, and dinosaur extinction, as well as various types, such as Carnosaurs and Ceratopsians. Each slim volume features numerous diagrams and full-color illustrations with informative captions. Sidebar material includes a feature called "Data Base" that provides vital statistics on specific dinosaurs (name, pronunciation, meaning, what it ate, size, when and where it lived, order, suborder, and family). An index for the complete set appears in each volume, as does the same glossary. Other user-friendly enhancements include color coding of pages to distinguish text from index and glossary and subject heading tabs at the top and bottom of pages to indicate previous and subsequent topics.
Coverage is thorough, and the text should be accessible for the intended audience. Some topics are addressed in detail. Volume three, for example, contains a four-page discussion of the ongoing debate over how fast Carnosaurs, and in particular Tyrannosaurus, could run. Occasional Briticisms appear (tonnes, armoured) but do not impede comprehension. One potential source of consternation is that many of the illustrations have been rendered in near-photographic quality. Although this enhances the visual appeal of the set, it may also prove confusing to younger readers. A highlighted "Word of Caution" appears on the final page of each volume, reminding researchers that no one knows what dinosaurs looked like, but librarians and media specialists should be prepared for queries regarding the books with "real" dinosaur pictures.
These concerns aside, the set should prove popular in collections that cater to a younger clientele. The Marshall Cavendish set might be a first priority, because its straight alphabetical order lends itself to novice researchers and makes it perfect for reports; but the Grolier set provides a sophisticated thematic overview for more advanced devotees. Libraries where dinosaurs are popular (and where aren't they?) will want to provide both resources.
