Gr. 7-12. Exhaustive in scope, this set of 10 volumes is an excellent resource for students seeking to enhance their knowledge of music: from basic theory of sound through a history of classical music to what's being played around the world today. Each volume follows a similar textbook-style format of succinct chapters divided by clear headings, with timelines, feature boxes, well-chosen and well-reproduced color photos, and a glossary. The language is intelligent and plain, with musical terms bolded and defined in text, although some readers may take issue with the occasional opinions stating an era's "most important" singers and songs as fact. But the spot-on range of artists, composers, and related trends is extraordinarily broad, accurate, and thorough. An overview of ancient instruments reads just as compellingly as a segment tracing the roots of hip-hop, while the third volume about world music is particularly notable in its finger-on-the-pulse survey of contemporary global trends. Both school and public libraries will find a wide readership among browsers and report writers young and old. Useful also for adult ESL learners. Highly recommended. Gillian Engberg

Gr 6-10-A broad but generally successful overview. While most of the volumes focus on styles of music, others cover such topics as music as a profession; instruments and new technologies; theater and film music; and voice and song, including an exploration of how voice has been used in the creation of music. Folk, Country, and Cajun Music focuses on U.S. traditions, but an earlier volume does mention its place in other cultures. The usefulness of this set is slightly diminished by the uneven quality of the writing. Music of Stage and Screen is one of the weaker volumes; its overview of Broadway music degenerates into a listing of shows without much additional information. The books are attractively designed with black-and-white and full-color photos, historical drawings, reproductions, and diagrams that provide additional insight. This clear and accessible resource will be used for browsing and assignments.
