Book Description John Murray, London, 1955. Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. The borderlands between India and Eastern Tibet contain some of the few parts of the world which remain to this day, un-mapped and unexplored. Separated from the plains of Assam by a belt of precipitous, forest-clad hills and impassible gorges, and from Tibet by the Great Himalayan Range, they have long been political no-man's-land, and their primitive inhabitants lacked all direct contacts with the outside world. Towards the end of the Second World War the author was entrusted with the task of exploring the area west of the Subansiri River and of establishing friendly relations with such independent tribes as Daflas and Apa Tanis. By their frequent raiding and inter-village warfare these tribes had gained a reputation of ferocity and treachery, and the Government of India considered the acquisition of first-hand knowledge of their economic, social and political conditions an indispensable prelude to the establishment of administrative control. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library. Bookseller Inventory # 018207
