In opening decades of this century, Aurel Stein was the outstanding European explorer and archaeologist of the remote deserts of Central Asia. These bordered on India, Kashmir, and China, where medieval Chinese traders followed The Silk Road leading to the Near East and Europe. Stein discovered spectacular remains of a vanished Buddhist civilizationwall paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and the earliest known printed book. Walker (Kensington and Chelsea: A Social and Architectural History, 1987), a British journalist, has written a comprehensive and sympathetic biography describing Steins single-minded devotion to uncovering the remains of this long-forgotten culture. For his efforts, the Chinese denounced him as an imperialist villain who had robbed them of their history.
