The first edition of "The Early Canterbury Runs" was published in 1930 and followed several years in which Acland's series on these stations appeared in the The Christchurch Press. These provided the basis for the first printing, a second series of which appraed in 1940 with a secondd ecition 1946, a third with glossary in 1951. This fourth edition of 1975 was extensively revised by W H Scotter and incorporated annotations by G R Macdonald. More importantly the fourth was also the first illustrated edition of the work, featuring maps, early contemporary art and photos. It also provides brief biogs of Ackland, Macdonald and Scotter. The number of runs described is about 170, listed alphabetically at the front, where a further 21 run name changes are recorded. Truely a monumental, history of the beginnings of NZ's agricultural economy and the famous Canterbury lamb. 417 pages including bibliography, sheep station glossary and index, 91 illustrations including four colour paintings, b/w contemporary art, photos and portraits, nine maps or figures. Brick red hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, ink gift inscription top FFEP with name address added below, text block otherwise VG+. Wrap-round colour art DJ (Mount Alford by J D Barraud) has two tape repaired tears, (top front adjacent spine and spine base), small segments missing top edge in spine area, few other chips, spine lightly sunned.
