A Japanese officer killed in the bitter fighting in Papua New Guinea in World War II wrote these words in his diary. And from this comes the title of this War History of the several battalions created from 1940 to help throw the Japanese invaders out of Papua New Guinea. This is a War History of the Papuan Infantry Battalion [1940-1946] and 1 of 2 New Guinea Infantry Battalions [1944-1946] and 3 New Guinea Infantry Battalion [1945-1947]. In November 1944 the Pacific Islands Regiment was created at Nazab near Lae in New Guinea - controlling the then veteran Papuan Infantry Battalion and 1 and 2 New Guinea Infantry Battalions. Early in 1945, 3 New Guinea Infantry Battalion was raised. With the exception of the Milne Bay campaign in eastern Papua, units of these battalions fought with Allied troops in every campaign in Papua, New Guinea and the New Britain and Bougainville Islands. The highly trained native soldiers were recognised for their tenacious fighting qualities - not only by the Australian and American Troops in Papua New Guinea, but also by the Japanese. Book.
