Grade 4-6-Josh Trimble loves his two ferrets. One day, he and the class bully get into a fight and, while waiting outside the principal's office for their punishment, Scott bets that his ferret will beat Josh's in the Hartley Ferret Derby, a major event in Australia, where the story takes place. The loser of the bet pays the winner $10 and gives him his pet. Josh knows nothing about racing these animals, and has only seven days to learn. His grandfather agrees to help him, but then suffers a stroke, and one of his ferrets runs away. Readers get caught up in the boy's fears about his grandfather's health and his sense of loss over his missing pet. The pacing is at times a bit slowbut Josh is a character whom readers will like and his plight is something to which they can relate. Not a necessary purchase but an enjoyable addition on a lesser-known topic.
