For every critic who bemoans the high processor and hard-disk demands of Microsoft's commercial productivity suite, Microsoft Office, there's a home or small-office user who's getting the job done happily with Microsoft Works. Microsoft Works Suite 2001 Step by Step takes the novice Works user on a guided tour of the versatile product. Like a lot of super-basic books, this one approaches its subject via the tasks that you might want to perform with it, such as creating a mass mailing or newsletter. In each task's section, readers get a series of step-by-step guides that explain, in some detail, how to carry out the subtasks that are associated with each major task.
The problem with the step-by-step approach (a fault of the approach, generally, not of Microsoft Press's Step by Step series) is that it's not very tolerant of variance. If you want to achieve a result that's slightly different from the author's example, you're pretty much on your own. The same goes for those times when you make a mistake (or try an experiment) and get something different from what's described in the book. This book assumes that you follow the steps precisely; so, be willing to rely on Works' online help, if you're going to explore on your own. --David Wall
