Review:
Marcus Pfister's three stories about the beautiful multicolored fish who learns a lesson in sharing and caring are gathered here in one boxed gift set. In addition to the bestselling The Rainbow Fish, an American Booksellers Book of the Year in 1995, the set includes Rainbow Fish to the Rescue and Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale. Pfister addresses prejudice and the importance of community through his gentle tales. In each story, miscommunication and misunderstandings lead to hurt feelings or even danger, until Rainbow Fish takes a risk for the sake of peace. Pfister's message is not subtle to the adult reader, but for preschoolers, it hits the mark. Of course, any young reader will point to the flashy, glittering illustrations as the best part of the books. Metallic, foil-stamped scales nestled among the undersea greens, purples, and blues of the other fish make these illustrations real eye-catchers. This deluxe hardcover set of all three titles, with its sparkly slipcase, will make a welcome gift for every Rainbow Fish fan. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter
